Our approach to eating disorder treatment

Eating disorders develop when a person’s relationship with food becomes a way to cope with challenging experiences, emotions, and thoughts. These complex mental health conditions bring pain, confusion, and fear.

We’re here to help you rebuild your relationship with food, enjoyment, and your own self. The 360-degree treatment approach we use at our eating disorder rehabilitation centre is tailored to address each of those experiences, emotions and thoughts that have become too difficult to manage alone.

We understand unequivocally that pain is universal, but recovery has to be personal.

We can only tailor a programme to you if we know where the pain lies. Using our 360-interdisciplinary approach, your team will identify every possible area of your health and well-being requiring attention and re-balancing. The process forms the bedrock of your treatment programme.

Eating disorders are rooted as much in our bodies as our minds. From 24-hour ECG monitoring and HRV testing to stress echocardiography and full-body MRIs, our advanced diagnostics tools will identify each possible area of your health and well-being that requires re-balancing. By taking a functional medicine approach to diagnostics, we are able to pinpoint any underlying issues that are present such as inflammation, gut imbalances, toxin exposure, nutritional deficiencies, parasites, or heavy metal accumulation.

You will work in one-on-one daily sessions with a dedicated psychotherapist/psychologist, who will help you articulate and process the underlying patterns, pains, and stressors that have contributed to your eating disorder. They will also assist you in rewiring your relationship with food and creating a sustainable symptom-management mechanism. As our psychiatrists are also all trained in various psychotherapy modalities, they will also work with you psychotherapeutically.

Working in conjunction with your psychotherapists, your psychiatrist will oversee your programme, ensuring that your mental well-being is carefully looked after. Our psychiatrists take a precision psychiatry approach, designing your treatment based on your unique biological and psychological profile. Eating disorders are highly co-occurring with other mental health conditions, so you will also work one-on-one with your psychiatrist to address any other issues that might be contributing to your eating disorder. If deemed necessary, they can provide a mental health diagnosis and/or prescribe medication.

Working with a live-in therapist means that therapy can happen as and when needed rather than waiting for the designated therapy slot to come around. We find that the most effective therapy happens in the moments between official therapy sessions and when symptoms are particularly pronounced, like when making a mid-morning coffee or at 3 am.

At Paracelsus Recovery, we are passionate supporters of the psychedelic revolution in mental health and eating disorder treatment. In some cases, we can provide ketamine-assisted psychotherapy to support your recovery, which we will gladly do when appropriate.

Biochemical restoration is a branch of functional medicine that aims to ensure that a person’s mind and body have all of the chemicals and building blocks required to function optimally. It is crucial for eating disorder recovery because it addresses the nutritional and biochemical imbalances that exacerbate your symptoms and suffering.

We integrate tailored physical therapies into your programme to support holistic healing and recovery. These therapies, including physiotherapy, yoga, pilates, equine therapy, dog therapy, and massage (amongst many others), are designed to alleviate tension, foster a deeper sense of connection with yourself, and restore your body’s natural balance.

Our psycho-nutrition and dietitian team will create personalised nutrition plans to restore your health. We will work together as we make these plans, ensuring you feel comfortable as you undergo the difficult journey of eating disorder recovery.

The mind-body connection lies at the heart of our holistic approach to health, longevity and well-being. Each treatment programme will include wellness treatments that we believe will help you in your recovery journey. Access to the Dolder Grand Spa, recipient of the renowned ‘Best Spa in Europe’ award, is also included.

Eating disorders often lead to various physical health issues, and we will address each and every one of these. No matter the issues you are facing, whether it’s pain, cardiovascular, hormonal, sexual health, dental, or skin, to give just some examples, they will be diagnosed and addressed by our specialist doctors.
