Types of therapy
At Paracelsus Recovery, we use the most cutting-edge therapies as part of our holistic treatment approach. Satori Chair therapy, using our state-of-the-art Satori Chair, is one such therapy. The aim of Satori Chair therapy is to enhance relaxation and well-being through a combination of sensory experiences: sound, vibration, light stimulation, and a sense of zero gravity.
What is a Satori Chair?
A Satori Chair is a high-tech relaxation chair designed to promote deep relaxation, stress relief, and mental clarity using a combination of vibroacoustic therapy, guided meditation, and brainwave entrainment. In essence, it provides a fast-track to states of profound relaxation and meditation. It works by using sound, vibration, and light stimulation to influence brainwave activity and bring you into a meditative, deeply relaxed state. Typically, this involves vibroacoustic therapy: low-frequency vibrations that pulse through the chair, helping to relax muscles, reduce stress, and improve circulation. Binaural beats and sound therapy are also a feature of the Satori Chair. This involves special audio frequencies that guide the brain into deep relaxation, focus, or sleep states.
Complementing the sensory experience are guided meditation and breathwork to enhance mindfulness and stress reduction. Alongside this, the Satori Chair also has a zero gravity feature, which is a key part of its relaxation experience. The chair reclines into a “zero gravity” position, inspired by NASA technology, where your legs are elevated above your heart, mimicking the feeling of weightlessness. The zero gravity position amplifies the Satori Chair’s effects, making it feel like a floating meditation experience. Essentially, the combination of all the elements of the Satori Chair (the vibration, sound, guided breathwork and weightlessness) shifts the brain into alpha, theta, or delta waves, mimicking the effects of deep meditation.
What is a Satori Chair helpful for?
A Satori Chair is helpful for anyone seeking deep relaxation and stress relief, making it a beneficial element of comprehensive mental health and addiction treatment programmes. While research into the efficacy of the Satori Chair itself is currently limited, it draws on evidence-based techniques like vibroacoustic therapy, binaural beats, meditation, and zero-gravity positioning.
Specific elements of the experience of using the Satori Chair make it beneficial for a variety of mental health and addiction issues. For example, the combination of vibrational frequencies and sound therapy calms the nervous system, lowering cortisol (stress hormone) levels. As a result, it can help people with anxiety, depression, and PTSD feel more grounded and relaxed. The meditative nature of the experience thanks to binaural beats and guided meditation also promotes deep relaxation by encouraging shifts into alpha and theta brainwave states, which are associated with deep meditation, mindfulness, improved emotional regulation, mental clarity and problem-solving. This makes it particularly useful for individuals struggling with emotional instability or trauma-related disorders. Furthermore, the deep relaxation element due the zero gravity position and sound therapy can help reset sleep cycles and promote deeper, more restorative sleep, making it suitable for those struggling with sleep disorders.
The Satori Chair can also be deeply supportive of addiction recovery. For example, it can soothe withdrawal symptoms such as anxiety, muscle tension, and restlessness. The brainwave entrainment can also facilitate emotional release and subconscious healing for those with underlying trauma as the root of their addiction. Overall, the Satori Chair is a non-invasive, accessible way to support healing, even for people who struggle with traditional meditation.
How is a Satori Chair included in my programme?
Whenever the team guiding your recovery believes that using the Satori Chair will be beneficial to your recovery, they will recommend it as part of your comprehensive treatment programme. As a patient at Paracelsus Recovery, you will have access to our Satori Chair, which you can use to complement the other therapies and treatments. The Satori Chair requires nothing of you; it is an entirely passive experience. As a result, we offer the therapy as a way to unwind and have a break from the more intense therapies that are part of your treatment programme. In all cases, the Satori Chair should be considered a complementary therapy, rather than a replacement for evidence-based treatments like counselling, medication-assisted treatment (MAT), or cognitive-behavioral therapy (CBT). It does not interfere with any other therapies of treatments you may be having, making it a safe element of all of your treatment programmes.
Satori Chair treatment sessions take place in our private, purpose-built therapy room at our treatment centre. This soothing environment is designed to enhance the experience of deep relaxation that the satori chair facilitates. The recommended frequency and duration of time spent in the Satori Chair will depend on your unique needs, circumstances and treatment goals.
