WHAT WE TREAT
We have helped numerous clients overcome sudden wealth syndrome and can help you, too. Our bespoke, multidisciplinary treatment programme aims to address all underlying issues and provide you with the tools needed to ensure that you feel capable of managing your wealth.
SWS, also known as wealth fatigue, occurs when someone comes into a large sum of money but struggles to adapt to their changing circumstances. It can be one of the most confusing, difficult and self-destructive times in a person’s life. Unfortunately, it usually leads to the loss of that newly acquired wealth. Although not a medically recognised condition, anyone working with ultra-wealthy clients in the mental health field will confirm that SWS can cause immense stress in addition to a host of difficult emotions, experiences and events.
The profound change to your financial well-being that comes with a seemingly-overnight financial windfall has a knock-on effect on your identity, relationships and sense of meaning. However this money comes to you, whether that’s through suddenly making millions in cryptocurrency or selling a family business and becoming a multi-millionaire, the experience can be intensely emotional and alienating. It also brings with it many new responsibilities.
While the shock and confusion you feel when experiencing a sudden and extreme windfall are normal, if they persist as you adapt to your new financial situation, you could develop sudden wealth syndrome. For example, if these challenging emotions and newfound and unexpected pressure lead you to adopt self-destructive coping strategies, such as isolation, substance abuse, inappropriate decision making or reckless spending, it could signify that you are struggling with SWS. SWS is particularly common in younger wealth recipients and those with humbler backgrounds.
At Paracelsus Recovery, you can effectively stop SWS in its tracks by cultivating all of the necessary tools needed to navigate the emotional side-effects of your financial transition.

How we treat sudden wealth syndrome
We can’t tell you exactly what your four-week stay will involve because each treatment plan is bespoke and tailored to your unique situation. Sudden Wealth Syndrome often brings emotional, psychological, and relational struggles, and our approach addresses these complexities in a holistic way.
Every day of your stay is thoughtfully structured to include a range of carefully selected therapeutic elements that complement one another. We focus on helping you navigate the emotional and psychological pressures of newfound wealth, such as identity changes, anxiety, stress, and relational strain. Our therapies are designed to ensure that all aspects of your well-being, from physical to emotional and psychological, are comprehensively addressed, allowing you to regain balance and clarity in your life. See below for more details.
Our approach considers the whole person: mind, body and soul
We use a 360-degree treatment approach to help you effectively manage sudden wealth syndrome. By carrying out intensive testing, we are able to determine the exact treatment and therapies required. This multidisciplinary approach enables us to address any underlying issues and provide you with all the tools needed to ensure that you feel capable of managing your wealth.
For example, our team typically focuses on helping our SWS clients make spending decisions that align with their goals. To do that, we can provide various psychoeducation sessions to help you understand how our emotions can affect spending. While it depends on your specific needs, these can range from the neuroscience of money and financial boundary setting to navigating emotional decision-making and understanding how to incorporate wealth into our identity.
