WHAT WE TREAT

Sudden Wealth Syndrome (SWS)

We have helped numerous clients overcome sudden wealth syndrome and can help you, too. Our bespoke, multidisciplinary treatment programme aims to address all underlying issues and provide you with the tools needed to ensure that you feel capable of managing your wealth.

SWS, also known as wealth fatigue, occurs when someone comes into a large sum of money but struggles to adapt to their changing circumstances. It can be one of the most confusing, difficult and self-destructive times in a person’s life. Unfortunately, it usually leads to the loss of that newly acquired wealth. Although not a medically recognised condition, anyone working with ultra-wealthy clients in the mental health field will confirm that SWS can cause immense stress in addition to a host of difficult emotions, experiences and events.

The profound change to your financial well-being that comes with a seemingly-overnight financial windfall has a knock-on effect on your identity, relationships and sense of meaning. However this money comes to you, whether that’s through suddenly making millions in cryptocurrency or selling a family business and becoming a multi-millionaire, the experience can be intensely emotional and alienating. It also brings with it many new responsibilities.

While the shock and confusion you feel when experiencing a sudden and extreme windfall are normal, if they persist as you adapt to your new financial situation, you could develop sudden wealth syndrome. For example, if these challenging emotions and newfound and unexpected pressure lead you to adopt self-destructive coping strategies, such as isolation, substance abuse, inappropriate decision making or reckless spending, it could signify that you are struggling with SWS. SWS is particularly common in younger wealth recipients and those with humbler backgrounds.

At Paracelsus Recovery, you can effectively stop SWS in its tracks by cultivating all of the necessary tools needed to navigate the emotional side-effects of your financial transition.
