WHAT WE TREAT

Rehab for Lorazepam (Ativan) Addiction

Ativan is a highly addictive benzodiazepine often prescribed for anxiety or insomnia. Because it’s a prescribed medication, it can create a false sense of security. After all, how could something from a doctor possibly be addictive? If you’ve come to the difficult realisation that you’re dependent on Ativan, please know that you’re not alone and that help is available. At Paracelsus Recovery, we’re here to support you in overcoming your Ativan addiction, no matter how overwhelming that might feel.

Benzodiazepines like Avitan are sedatives designed to treat various conditions such as anxiety, insomnia, and epilepsy. Ativan works by enhancing the effects of the neurotransmitter GABA in our brain. GABA is a tranquilising neurotransmitter, and billions of brain cells respond to its signals. When someone feels overly anxious, the brain becomes excited and over-active. Ativan contains chemicals that can counteract these over-active chemical messengers, and keep the brain in a more tranquilised state. However, as a result, benzodiazepines like Ativan are highly addictive to those of us stuck in that fight-or-flight response. As a result, it  can lead to severe physical and psychological dependence as well as many psychological issues.

Because Ativan works by slowing brain function in the central nervous system (CNS), individuals taking more than the recommended dose of the drug may become more inactive and apathetic than they used to be. As such, the more a person abuses it or exceeds their recommended dosage, the more they will feel unable to cope without the drug. This can quickly result in a tolerance to Ativan, which can lead to more abuse, larger doses and a dependency.

Ativan slows brain function by depressing the central nervous system (CNS). When someone takes more than the prescribed dose, they may begin to feel unusually lethargic or apathetic. Over time, misuse of the drug can make it increasingly difficult to function without it. This often leads to developing a tolerance, requiring higher doses to achieve the same effect, which can quickly spiral into dependency.

Combining Ativan with other CNS depressants, such as alcohol, poses serious risks. The CNS, which controls essential functions like breathing and heart rate, can become overly suppressed. If this happens, the body may struggle to maintain these functions, potentially causing dangerously slow breathing or heart rates or even stopping them altogether.

If you are facing an Ativan addiction, recovery is possible. Detoxing, however, can be incredibly challenging without professional support. A medical detox can help you manage the physical symptoms of withdrawal, while mental health professionals can guide you through the psychological challenges, providing a path toward lasting recovery.

Through our combination of medical, psychological and personal care, we are proud to be the only clinic in the world that addresses co-occurring conditions and every possible root-cause of Ativan addiction.
