WHAT WE TREAT

Rehab for Diazepam (Valium) Addiction

Valium is one of the most addictive and most deadly prescription medications available today. At Paracelsus Recovery, we can help you overcome your Valium addiction, no matter how challenging that may feel. Our holistic and pragmatic treatment programmes are designed to support you through a safe detox from Valium and address each underlying cause of the addiction.

Valium is classed as a benzodiazepine. These are sedatives designed to treat anxiety, alcohol withdrawal, muscle spasms and seizures or fits. Valium works by enhancing the effects of the neurotransmitter GABA in our brain. GABA is a tranquilising neurotransmitter, and billions of brain cells respond to its signals. When someone feels overly anxious, the brain becomes excited and over-active. Valium contains chemicals that can counteract these over-active chemical messengers, and keep the brain in a more tranquilised state. However, for those of us struggling with constant stress, be it emotional, psychological or social, benzodiazepines like Valium are highly addictive, as they essentially circumnavigate that stress and enable us to feel ‘okay’ for a second. Because of that, valium abuse often leads to severe physical and psychological dependence as well as many psychological issues.

Valium is often used by people who need help dealing with the stress of daily life. But because Valium works by slowing brain function in the central nervous system (CNS), individuals taking more than the recommended dose of the drug may become more inactive and apathetic than they used to be. As such, the more a person abuses it or exceeds their recommended dosage, the more they will feel unable to cope without the drug. This can quickly result in a tolerance to Valium, which can lead to more abuse, larger doses and dependency.

When sedatives such as Valium are mixed with other central nervous system depressants, like alcohol, the CNS becomes severely depressed. The CNS is the subconscious part of the body that works to regulate breathing and heart rates. If it becomes too depressed, it has the potential to stop or ‘forget’ to function altogether. This can result in someone struggling to breathe or stopping breathing and a dangerously slowed heart rate.

If you have developed a Valium addiction, you can not only overcome it, but you can also find a way to manage those initial stressors that lead you to become dependent on valium. In other words, it’s not that you need to ‘get off’ the drug and go back to how things were; you can fully transform your life so that you are happy, calm and sober.

However, it can be extremely challenging to detox from Valium without professional, structured support. Often, the only safe way to do this is to undergo a medical detox to manage the physical withdrawal symptoms and to work with mental health experts to manage the psychological withdrawal.

Through our combination of medical, psychological and personal care, we are proud to be the only clinic in the world that addresses co-occurring conditions and every possible root-cause of heroin addiction.
